The approach
I research before I design, and plan for more than one future.
I am a product designer and researcher. I interview users and run usability tests, and I use scenarios to see how a plan holds up over decades.
Background
Most design problems start somewhere other than the screen.
I started out wanting to be an engineer. As I learned to code, I got interested in making interfaces usable, and that is how I found my way to UX design.
Working with startups changed how I saw the job. Many of the choices that shape a product's experience are business decisions, made before design starts. So I began working beyond interfaces, on research and product strategy, and later studied strategic foresight to plan further ahead.
Now I do both kinds of work. I talk to users, design the product end to end, and stay with engineers until it ships. When a team is planning years ahead, I test the plan against more than one future.
Currently
I am open to product design and research roles. I also take on a small number of client projects each year, from a single working session to 12 weeks of end-to-end product design. I am based in Toronto and work remotely or on site.
